Second Nature Feeding

After some research, we conceived the Second Nature bottle to assist Mother Nature. This bottle functions similarly to mother's breast in order to effectively supplement breastfeeding. Proper suckling action is required by infants to extract milk during breastfeeding. This suckling action occurs when baby latches to the areola portion of the breast past the nipple. The gums compress the milk sinuses, and the tongue is located over the lower gum, its motion stripping the milk. The baby sucks the areola, not the nipple, to gather the milk from the pores. When baby needs a rest, suckling stops and milk no longer flows. Before Second Nature, all bottles were designed with a hole at the end of the nipple that was always open. This allowed milk to flow whether baby was trying to extract milk or not. In these bottles, the milk flowed without any suckling action, all baby was required to do was swallow. Proper latching and suckling were no longer required to gather the milk and the suckling dynamics of the pallet changed. If the milk flowed too fast or baby needed to rest, the tongue rolled back to try and cover the open hole. At this point, the baby was drinking as though the bottle were a straw. If the baby could not keep up with the flow, milk spilled out the sides of baby’s mouth. Once baby became used to continuous flow bottles, returning to the breast was difficult.

The Second Nature feeding nipple has been created with tiny skin like pores that remain closed when not in use. Once the baby begins to suckle, the nipple membrane stretches and the tiny pore like holes begin to open allowing flow. The harder the baby suckles, the more milk begins to flow. If baby is not suckling, there is no flow. If fact, if baby is not latching and suckling properly (and simply drinking like a straw) milk will not flow from the Second Nature bottle. Proper latching and massaging of the nipple are required to stretch the membranes. This minimizes the potential for nipple confusion because the same actions are required for both breast-feeding and using the Second Nature bottle.

Recently, Umix invited medical experts and mothers to express their opinions about the Second Nature bottle during focus group sessions. All groups were very excited about the unique benefit of the Second Nature nipple! In fact, feedback continues to be so positive, Second Nature has the potential to revolutionize the feeding industry.

Helpful tips for transitioning from continuous flow bottles to Second Nature:

  • Try Second Nature in a relaxed environment when you have plenty of time.
  • Place a few drops of milk on your fingers and insert into baby’s mouth. Follow with Second Nature bottle.
  • The response to Second Nature bottle is best if introduced before the use of continuous flow bottles.
